Division Champions: The best team in each division automatically makes the playoffs. These teams are the division champions. Since there are three divisions in each conference (or league as baseball calls them), there are 3 teams (out of 4 per conference) that are division champions and therefore make the playoffs. The remaining playoff team is the Wild Card team.

Other Playoff Teams: In addition to the three division champions that make the playoffs two other teams also make it. These two teams are the next best team in each of the two conferences (or leagues).

Determining Home Field: Home field always belongs to the team with the higher seed. If two teams have the same seed (in the league championship round) home field would go to the team with the best record (using tie breakers).

Tie Breakers: Often times the record of two teams is not enough to determine the higher seed, division champion, or even a playoff spot all together. In all cases, ties are broken with this formula: First, the wins and losses of a team are compared, if those are the same, then the game defaults to the difference between runs scored and runs allowed. Unfortunately, tie breakers including like opponents, strength of schedule and other somewhat subjective and difficult to calculate criteria are not able to be used due to server restrictions.

Playoff Rounds: The playoffs start with game 163. There are 162 regular season games before the playoffs start. There are 3 rounds to the playoffs. The number of games in each playoff round is league specific. By default most leagues have best of 5 game series in the playoffs. Some leagues, however, may have 7 or even 3 game series.
